At first glance, the photo from San Francisco Opera's Billy Budd looks like any other opera featuring Nathan Gunn, i.e., pug nose in profile, chin a-jut, freshly waxed chest front and center.
But on closer inspection, it turns out that Billy is getting a tweak from Mr. Squeak:
"Warm as a sailor's pants, gay as a hornpipe dance..."
La Cieca wishes to thank Albert's World of Artsy Fun for the revelation about Nathan's nips, and also for pointing her to SF Mike's Civic Center, which features lots of photos of the campy Pecheurs de Perles production and other sights around the War Memorial Opera House.

Thanks for the "Civic Center" plug, La Cieca. I LOVE your site. It's good, mean, clean fun.
Albert (of Artsy World) and I were both supernumeraries with all the other sailor mens-es and had a smashingly good time, which included ogling the hetero Nathan Gunn. The 120 guys onstage were an interesting mix of about one-third gay, one third hetero, and one-third "artistic but married to a woman."
By the way, Britten is my favorite 20th century opera composer, and like Verdi, his music sounds MUCH better in actual performance than on a recording.
